This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.”
A voice of one calling: In the desert prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and ALL mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Advent is a time of preparing, the beginning of the church year. We usually mark the time in preparation for Christmas for the Incarnation. We joke about the juggernaut of the season rolling us downhill, as if it were completely out of our control.
But it’s not out of control — and we do well to give Advent its space in our lives. Because there is also a sense in which we are living our lives in an Advent season. Just as the people who lived before the Incarnation looked forward to the fulfillment of promises, we also look forward to the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to come again.
