You might wish to check out Amy Welborn today. She links to a Peggy Noonan editorial on OpinionJournal.com that makes exactly the point you're making here.

While I think that Wallis is right, I believe he is missing the point. It appears that the Democratic candidates don't believe faith *should* play a role in informing their politics. Since the Democratic Party is generally comprised of those who agree with that sentiment, there is little political risk for a candidates who takes that stand.

Besides, on many of the issues they would be on shaky ground trying to argue their case based on religious principles.
