Keeping Politics in Perspective
David Wayne of Jollyblogger calls Christian political bloggers to remember where our primary loyalties lie, and that the kingdom of God is not dependent on the fortunes of a particular political candidate or party. He even likens the approach of some strongly political believers to Galatianism — adding something on top of faith in Jesus Christ to the qualifications for a “real Christian.” A lengthy post, but worth the time. The discussion continues here.
I first encountered that kind of Galatianism in college, around the time of Reagan’s first election. My Christian friends questioned my faith because of my anti-death penalty beliefs. As if one could merit eternal life only by the blood of Christ AND a certain political agenda. I know that’s how some believers — and bloggers — come off now, both on the right and the left.
That’s one reason I’ve shied away from purely political issues in recent weeks. I too easily fall into the trap of sounding like I have all the answers. I fall into the easy and obvious analysis of an issue, rather than analyzing it in light of God’s Word. I put my hope in the City of Man instead of the City of God.
Thanks for the link and for adding some good additional thoughts of your own.
