The initial months of using my fistula for dialysis seemed to be full of setbacks. There would be a clot or something, and it wouldn’t work. But I still had the permacath in my chest, so we could just use that as my access.
Despite the name, permacaths aren’t the ideal dialysis access. They are infection magnets and an inconvenience to take care of. So, as my fistula matured and became more dependable, the permacath was removed.
Now I have really come to take my fistula for granted. Until Saturday night. When it didn’t work.
